Withdrawal of II b. AK behind the Mortagne

Lamath, 25 August (map 15)

The Sixth Army order for 25 August arrived at 0320hrs. At 0100hrs the 3 ID commander had ordered the troops to be combat-ready in their positions by 0500hrs. At 0530hrs, before the corps order arrived, he directed 6 Bde to attack over Vennezey to Haillainville, while 5 Bde followed echeloned right over Rozelieures to Damas-aux-Bois.

3 FA Bde, attached to 6 Bde, opened fire on French artillery at Côte d’Essey. IR 17, with I, II and MGK/IR 17 on the high ground south of Remenoville, quickly became involved in a firefight with French infantry between Vennezey and Rozelieures. FAR 5 unlimbered on the high ground north of Vennezey to provide fire support. IR 22 (minus III/IR 22) moved out at 0715hrs from Moriviller, but immediately ran into serious resistance in the Bois de Filière. II/IR 22 moved through the wood in heavy artillery fire, took Hill 341 and advanced on Rozelieures, while I/IR 22 drifted to the west side of the Bois de Réthimont. I/FAR 12 moved at a gallop through the Bois de Filière and unlimbered in heavy artillery fire on the south edge to support IR 22.
